Meghan McCain, Chelsea Clinton and TV's Shameful Love Affair with Political Daughters (Opinion)
This story appears in the Dec. 2 issue of The Hollywood Reporter. Wanted: Reporter for regular feature segments on NBC Nightly News. No journalists need apply. NBC sent its viewers a miserable message about its brand with the addition of Chelsea Clinton (qualification: onetime residency in the White House, boldface parents) as a reporter for Making a Difference, its segment about volunteerism and community service. The quality of journalism that we deliver, NBC News implicitly states, is of such a low standard that a rank amateur is qualified to stand in front of our cameras, just as long as she has a famous last name. Chelsea the newswoman joins colleagues Meghan McCain, whose father was the Republican nominee for president, and Jenna Bush Hager, a double threat as both former first daughter and first granddaughter. NBC News did not initiate this trend: Former first son Ron Reagan's qualification to be a contributor for ABC's Good Morning America during the 1980s and '90s was as a professional dancer (and that famous name). PHOTOS: The Clinton Foundation's Decade of Difference Fundraiser This Clinton scion's hiring means that every former president since 1980 has a network TV journalist in the household or extended family. Why? The urge to hire from political families is an example of what NYU journalism professor Jay Rosen calls the "quest for innocence" in the political press. News organizations try to square a circle by asserting that they are inside players with access to the corridors of political power while at the same time remaining neutral outsiders, "innocent," without a partisan ax to grind. Hiring someone whose access derives from blood rather than political activism solves this problem. Clinton certainly has an insider's knowledge about West Wing crises, but as a reporter, she carries none of the ideological baggage that hiring a converted political operative (Tim Russert), onetime White House press secretary (George Stephanopoulos), former presidential aide (Diane Sawyer) or ex-speechwriter (Chris Matthews) entails. The other benefit of hiring a political heir is the freshness of telegenic youth: Chelsea, 31, is less grizzled than James Carville and has a less risque résumé than Eliot Spitzer. Nightly News likely hopes to improve its aging demographic with an on-air face in the target demo, a shift from 15 years ago when inspirational segments were filed by another nonjournalist impostor, "Stormin' " Norman Schwarzkopf. Nevertheless, this particular choice is peculiar: Clinton might know what an inside-the-White-House crisis feels like, but she has zero knowledge of how such a crisis -- or any news event, for that matter -- is covered by working journalists. Her parents kept her in a reporter-free bubble throughout her childhood; she stonewalled reporters when she stumped for her mother during Campaign 2008; and as recently as 16 months ago, she tried to block the press from covering her wedding, keeping the location secret in an attempt to thwart the paparazzi; and she wouldn't even give interviews in connection with her hiring by NBC. STORY: Chelsea Clinton Joins NBC News as Special Correspondent And the hiring of the hedge fund alumna reveals NBC News to have a particularly tin ear at a time when mainstream media stand accused by Occupy Wall Street of being complicit in an undemocratic political system as members and mouthpieces of the "one percent," rather than watchdogs scrutinizing corruption. NBC News has enough baggage with its CNBC brand; now imagine Clinton and Andrea Mitchell appearing on Nightly News during coverage of the next financial crisis: the daughter of the president who deregulated high finance with the wife of central banker Alan Greenspan, who allowed it to run amok. NBC News is reporting from that worldview rather than on it. You could say Clinton, Hagen and McCain are being exploited as eye-catching props by powerful men projecting an image of insider access. You could say this amounted to their being "pimped out" -- unless, of course, you happen to work for NBC News, in which case you would be suspended. Just ask David Shuster, who was suspended from MSNBC in 2008 for using that phrase in connection with Clinton. There is one group of professional journalists that should feel gratified by her arrival: field producers. Their reporting chops are all the more indispensable as the figures in front of their cameras become purely symbolic. Andrew Tyndall is publisher of Tyndall Report, which monitors network TV news. Bella and Edward's 'Breaking Dawn' Mishap, and Other Movie Honeymoons Gone Awry
ZOMG, Bella and Edward are getting married! Their love has overcome all obstacles, and these two crazy kids (OK, one crazy kid and one sparkly old guy in a crazy kid's body) are finally gonna make the ultimate commitment in 'Breaking Dawn, Part 1.' To be followed, of course, by an extra-romantic super-sparkly honeymoon. Or not. Yes, as everyone who's read the books knows, it's not exactly smooth sailing for Bella and Edward as they head off on their romantic retreat to the private island of Esme. Their starry-eyed honeymoon comes to an abrupt halt when Bella realizes there's a little monster kicking inside of her belly. That's right -- a little half-human, half-vampire bundle of joy. Since it's not your average fetus, Bella's pregnancy accelerates at a rapid rate, effectively serving as a major buzzkill for their honeymoon as Edward frets about the effects on Bella's body. They have to say goodbye to exotic Esme early and rush back to scenic Forks. Bummer, huh? But theirs isn't the first movie honeymoon to go awry. In fact, movie honeymoons rarely go smoothly. Remember when Charlton Heston got totally sidetracked by work on his honeymoon in 'Touch of Evil'? It completely ruined their romantic getaway, and even put his lovely new bride (Janet Leigh) in danger! Bella and Edward's preempted honeymoon got us thinking about other movie honeymoons that don't go as planned. Movie Honeymoons Gone Awry Edward and Bella aren't the first movie newlyweds to have their honeymoons cut short. Don't you just hate it when candlelit dinners and walks on the beach are ruined by creepy propositions, flesh-eating zombies and murderous psychos? Lionsgate Wants Gary Ross, Slumdog Writer for Hunger Games Sequel Catching Fire
The jury’s still out as far as I’m concerned on whether or not director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) was the right director to helm Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games, even with the mostly-satisfying first trailer debut earlier this week. Lionsgate, however, seems more confident in Ross, as they want him to return to helm the second Hunger Games installment, 2013’s Catching Fire, with writer Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) reportedly in the running to script. From Deadline: I’m told that Gary Ross, who directed The Hunger Games, is coming back for the sequel. He originally intended to write the outline for the second film and script it with author Suzanne Collins (they teamed to do a lot of writing on the first film), but the post production schedule on The Hunger Games has made that difficult. The highly anticipated trailer debut on Monday revealed a solid visual sense for the world inhabited by teenage heroine Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), a working class girl in a future dystopia who winds up competing in a televised death match against 23 other youngsters. The trailer teased the events leading up to said Hunger Games and showed fans of Collins’ novel glimpses of the characters they know well, including Katniss, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), Gale (Liam Hemsworth), and Cinna (Lenny Kravitz). What remains to be seen is if Ross and Co. capture the internal drama within Katniss as she begins to navigate the worlds of politics, love, and responsibility while trying to stay alive, not to mention how well Ross is able to evoke a sense of real danger and brutal violence in his tween and teen-oriented adventure. A more daring director would have been my preference — say Joe Wright, building off of the visceral action and style he lent to Hanna earlier this year — but Ross might be just safe enough to help make this the next MTV-safe franchise, a la Twilight. The Hunger Games as a story sets up the world of Panem and the inciting annual battle royale, but Catching Fire, the first of two sequels, expands Katniss’s world so much, and in such specific ways, that scripting it both for an established audience and for non-readers will be a trickier job. So while Collins adapting her own novel for the first film is a boon in many ways (a vote of confidence in the project, insurance against taking too much creative license or deviating from the material), it might take someone with more of a cinematic bent to translate the plot turns of Catching Fire to the screen. Is Beaufoy the right writer for the job? I don’t see why not; he’s notched solid films thus far, even if, as with Ross, there’s nothing in his resume that suggests he’s a particularly good match for a dystopian action adventure about a lethal teenage girl. Of course, Beaufoy’s Oscar statuette (and two additional writing nods) would give the Lionsgate series an added sheen of Oscar cred on top of Ross’s three nominations, so there’s that. Ranking the Late, Great Gilbert Cates's 14 Oscar Ceremonies, From 1990 to 2008
Say what you will about the legacy, taste and accomplishments of Gilbert Cates, the veteran producer and director who died today at age 77, but few people over the last quarter-century had more influence over the public perception of the Academy Awards. Maybe eight-time host Billy Crystal — except that 14-time producer Cates was responsible for hiring him. Among those 14 Cates-produced Oscarcasts — more than any other producer in the show’s 83-year history — is a trove of milestones, meltdowns, snafus, poignancy and otherwise peerless instants Hollywood history. Movieline looks back now at each, ranking Cates’s work and its impact on the Oscars, its attendees, its viewers, its organizers and the world as a whole. Re-order as you like in the comments. 14. 63rd Academy Awards (1991) Host: Billy Crystal Most Remembered For: Kevin Costner’s Dance With Wolves punking Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas for both Best Director and Best Picture. Highlight: Maybe not a “highlight” per se, but the Best Director presentation has everything: Tom Cruise butchering “Good Fellows,” Scorsese clapping with resignation, and Costner’s quaint tribute to Michael Ovitz, his wife and children, and his parents —in that order. 13. 62nd Academy Awards (1990) Host: Billy Crystal Most Remembered For: The utterly unremarkable run of Driving Miss Daisy to Best Picture. Helmer Bruce Beresford was snubbed by the Academy, prompting Crystal to quip in his opening song, “Did Driving Miss Daisy direct itself?” Highlight: While many purists would lean toward Steven Spielberg and George Lucas’s presentation of an Honorary Oscar to Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa, I’ll stand by the awarding of Best Original Song to Alan Menken and his late partner Howard Ashman for “Under the Sea.” It was everything great, poignant and powerful that the Oscars stand for — not to mention weird, featuring presenters, um, Paula Abdul and Dudley Moore: 12. 80th Academy Awards (2008) Host: Jon Stewart Most Remembered For: Nobody watching it. Highlight: Dark horse Best Actress winner Marion Cotillard’s thrilled, emotional acceptance speech (sadly not embeddable, but available here.) 11. 65th Academy Awards (1993) Host: Billy Crystal Most Remembered For: Incumbent Supporting Actor winner Jack Palance hauling Crystal onstage aboard a huge Oscar. (Palance’s IMDB credit for the night actually reads “Himself - Presenter: Best Actress in a Supporting Role & Pulling Billy Crystal on giant Oscar”) Highlight: It took them a while to get to their actual introduction, but Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni’s Honorary Oscar presentation to Federico Fellini — and the maestro’s subsequent speech (“I didn’t expect this, but maybe I did!”) — narrowly edge out a night that also saw Elizabeth Taylor collect the Hersholt Humanitarian Award and a WTF performer roster including Placido Domingo, Sheila E., Natalie Cole and Nell Carter. Hayley Atwell, Diane Kruger, Kate Beckinsale Reading With Tom Cruise For Oblivion
EXCLUSIVE: The hot role for young actresses is in Universal’s Joseph Kosinski-directed Tom Cruise science fiction film Oblivion. Jessica Chastain already signed on for one of two plum roles, and I’m told the studio will read three actresses for the other female lead this weekend in Pittsburgh. That is where Cruise is shooting One Shot, playing Jack Reacher in the Christopher McQuarrie-directed adaptation of the Lee Child novel series. Captain America‘s Hayley Atwell, Inglourious Basterds’ Diane Kruger, and Kate Beckinsale have made it to the lightning round to play a mysterious young woman who crash-lands on earth much to the shock of Cruise’s character, a soldier who is one of the last men on the planet in a post-apocalyptic future where most of the population lives in clouds above an earth surface that has been rendered uninhabitable. Cruise’s character is alone as he repairs the drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien life form, until he encounters a beautiful woman who crashes in a craft, and their experience together forces him to question his world view. Universal committed to finance and distribute the $100 million film last April, after Disney let it go because it didn’t fit the family film mold. The script by William Monahan got a rewrite from Karl Gajdusek. Kosinski hatched the idea for the project and set it to be published by Barry Levines Radical Media graphic novel imprint as a calling card for a movie when Kosinski was busy for so long directing Tron: Legacy. Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark are producing along with Levine.

I used to be nothing before - I used to be Europe - however am rooting for your Mets. TV Guide Magazine: Marilu Henner, who's an consultant around the program, might be the muse for Barbara...Walsh: I truly met her 2 decades ago. Her then husband would be a professional producer from the show I used to be in referred to as Gabriel's Fire. An regular person won't have appreciated meeting me. Once I saw her again recently, she understood the date and [other specifics] - it absolutely was wild. It absolutely was just like our show.Montgomery: It's intense. Marilu states it's like going to the "Sections" menu around the DVD player and picking what part of the movie you need and striking play. Personally, my memory is garbage. TV Guide Magazine: Perhaps you have two know each other before becoming costars? Walsh: We dated inside the '70s. Montgomery: [Feigns shock] I wasn't even born! No - we met within the first read-through. The show was referred to as Rememberer in those days. Walsh: Ererererer. Montgomery: To make sure that increased being a pleasurable joke. Whenever you stood a line, it may be like, "Oooh, you're the Forgetererer." "You're the Unforgivererererer." You have to all went for just about any cocktail. Walsh: Or 17. TV Guide Magazine: Poppy, you're up with no Trace for seven seasons Dylan did almost the same time on Puppy puppy nip/Tuck. How'd this series lure everybody to TV?Montgomery: I'd taken couple of years on get together with my boy [Jackson, 3, with actor Adam Kaufman] after Without any Trace. Someone said this script and loved it. I'd seen the an hour or so about memory ability. CBS is family personally. So everything fell into position.Walsh: I used to be trying to find contrast to Puppy puppy nip/Tuck. The means by which this character walks, talks - his feelings and routine is definitely an entirely different world. Some stars are off trying to find people crazy shows on cable - I already did that, which i had been really trying to find something such as this. Filming in NY was a number of it, too. Montgomery: The energy and vibe and appearance that shooting in NY offers the show - you can't re-create that. And particularly Queens, because you haven't seen it much on tv. Walsh: That's true. It grounds the show and feels as if less glamour plus much more working-class.Montgomery: We now have met some interesting figures while shooting. There's a girl in Whitestone who requested us looking for a vino or two. She'd a baby grand piano that Make the most of, our Teamster, was playing as being a concert pianist. And there's an enormous taxidermy grizzly bear inside the corner. I used to be like, "That is fantastic - and surreal." Memorable airs Tuesday at 10/9c on CBS. Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

(Worldwide sales: Entertainment One Films Canada, Toronto.) Produced by Cairo Cannon, James Mitchell. Executive producers, Katherine Butler, Tabitha Jackson, Alan Maher, Paul McGowan, Andre Singer. Co-producer, Rachel Lysaght. Directed, put together by Carol Morley. With: Zawe Ashton, Alix Luka-Cain, Naleem Bakshi, Cornell S. John, Martin Likster, Alistair Abrahams, Alton Edwards, Kim Sausage, Daniel Roberts, John Ioannou, Michael Davies, William Barthorpe, Kirk Thorne, Catherine Clarke, Lynne Featherstone, Mandy Allen, Prue Almond, Alison Campsie, Jerome Everette, David Gibbs, Kyle Thorne.British helmer Carol Morley provides her most assured build up to with "Wants a Existence," studying the mystery from the 38-year-old Londoner whose is discovered decaying in their apartment greater than couple of years after her dying. Mixing speaking-mind interviews with elaborate reconstructions of Joyce Vincent's existence, the next-time director can't miss getting a riveting tale from the onetime vivacious personality, known to by people who understood her as "stunning," "lovely," and "perfectly loved," but who nevertheless died alone, friendless and apparently missed by nobody. Further fest action is for several, but revenue across all platforms looks modest. Getting fearlessly uncovered her own troubled youth in their 50-minute docu debut, "The Alcohol Years," Morley is well fitted to probe yesteryear of Vincent, eliciting memories from former pals, roommates, co-employees and fanatics, while not Vincent's four brothers and sisters, who declined to register. Used in the film's favor is the fact Vincent emerges minus the tragic misfit suggested by her dying, but just like a complex and enjoyable personality whose mysteries should never be wholly broken. Vincent is discovered in their apartment in Wood Eco-friendly, North London, in 2006, her skeletal body rejected round the sofa and her television still on evidence pointed with a dying by natural causes in December 2003. Research by police and native newspapers learned handful of particulars about her, but an intrigued Morley made a decision to probe further, placing ads promoting pals in the deceased lady to enter touch. She was eventually capable of chart her subject's existence story: Vincent was well elevated in the strict Afro-Caribbean family london, popular but underachieving in class, after which it found success at the office jobs while ambitious to become singer. With no narration and little explanation within the filmmaker about her analysis (beyond glimpses from the whitened board which she sketches out Vincent's connections and actions), many of the detailed research that many most likely supports specific moments of restoration remains undisclosed. Audiences will have to accept on belief that Morley has based everything on witness claims. Either in situation, Zawe Ashton ("Blitz") supplies a compellingly credible performance since the chameleon-like subject. Docu benefits of a tone more sensitive than prurient. Disadvantages include some unnecessary reconstructions of banal occurrences together with a repetitive curtain-raiser with many different interviewees making the identical apparent points about decomposition smells, delinquent bills, neighbors, absent siblings and siblings and negligent government physiques. "Wants a Existence" reps a sizable advance from Morley's under-recognized sophomore effort, "Edge," a scripted feature. But her encounters with both fiction and nonfiction are clearly now joining together in the creatively effective hybrid which makes critiques with recent docu hits for instance "The Arbor" and "Catfish."Camera (color), Mary Farbrother, Lynda Hall editor, Chris Wyatt music, Craig Adamson music supervisor, Connie Farr production designer, Chris Richmond art company company directors, Adam A. "This (Kodak) license, combined with LLE and Imax's own intellectual property, puts us at the forefront of laser-based projection," said Imax CEO Rich Gelfond.Deal will generate royalty income for cash-strapped Kodak, which is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, though specific terms were not disclosed. MTV Star Sues Cinemax Over 'Johnny Bananas' in 'Entourage'
Claudette Barius/Cinemax Reality star John Devenanzio, who states he's generally known inside the entertainment world as "Johnny Bananas," went ahead with risks and punished the producers in the recently completed Cinemax series, Entourage. The complaintant is demanding the network be permanently barred from disseminating episodes that consists of "Johnny Bananas," which might get rid of the seventh and last season in the show. The 2009 summer season, Devenanzio, who came out just like a cast member on MTV's The Actual Existence Key West and several other MTV reality shows, had his lawyer fire off a cease-and-desist letter to Cinemax. The potential risks apparently did not do anything whatsoever to scare the network. So, on Monday,Devenanzio filed a complaint in NY Superior Court against Cinemax, parent Time Warner, and "Entourage" creator Doug Ellin. STORY: 'Entourage' Finale: THR Goes Behind-the-Moments in the Series The suit charges the accused with featuring an "unwarranted, unauthorized, and unfavorable mention of the complaintant's title and personality, and allusions to complaintant's mental and physical character." PHOTOS: 'Entourage' Finale: 20 Memorable Hollywood Cameos Within the Series Devenanzio's legal claims are remarkably vague. It appears thatDevenanzio is not saying any allegation of trademark breach, but rather accusing Cinemax of breaking his publicity and privacy rights, defaming him, and resulting in emotional distress. VIDEO: 'Entourage' Roundtable It's worth watching thatDevenanzio's lawyer isStephanie Ovadia, the identical person that represented She when the actress punished E-Trade for airing a commercial through the Super Bowl that featured a "milkaholic" baby named Lindsay. She didn't use a trademark on her behalf account title either, so Ovadia attempted use a theory how some lucky individuals have names that acquire such recognition and prestige, they are worth special defense against aggravation, harassment, and commercial advantage. Ovadia's court briefs were pretty entertaining, sloppy, and befuddling before that fit settled. Ovadia is becoming testing out a couple of of the identical issues within the Lohan situation in their new "Johnny Bananas" suit. In line with the complaint,Devenanzio "went through tremendous emotional distress which has been deliberately triggered upon complaintant by accused' unwarranted, unauthorized, and unjustified usage of complaintant's title and portrayal inside an offensive and disparaging manner in named 'Entourage'." (Underline ours) For his part, Kevin Dillon, who had the level of smoothness-playing-character role of "Johnny Bananas" in Entourage, told reporters in August that neither he nor Ellin "understood anything about [Devenanzio]" when the character was created, saying the chance suit will be a "bummer," partly because there's discussions from the real "Johnny Bananas" spin-off. Regardless of merits in the claim, people plans are likely off now, asDevenanzio not only seeks an injunction but furthermore award for and punitive damages. It's highly unlikely thatDevenanzio will achieve an injunction, and also the success inside the suit may depend on whether they can find anything in discovery that shows Ellin and also the authors hadDevenanzio in your thoughts after they created the "Johnny Bananas" character. They in addition to their teenage daughter, Crimson (Taissa Farmiga) pull-up stakes and mind mix-country for La.InchThis place is our second chance," Ben notifies Vivien, whose forgiveness he anxiously seeks if for few other reason than because she's not rested with him for pretty much yearly. This place, the household's new homestead, can be a pending "classic L.A. Victorian within the 20's," in line with the real-estate agent showing them around. Nevertheless it seems a great deal a lot more like a vestige of "Monster Chiller Horror Theater," a domicile whose past people have, clearly, died gruesomely.Offered!Once the facets of this horror story appear second-character (you will discover also creaking entrance doors and jars of icky lab people inside the basement), they take the kind of striking imagery that, sometimes, ensures they are as unsettling since they're familiar. It need hardly be stated the home, restored in the previous ramshackle condition, keeps disturbing products in which the Harmons will stumble. For example, a fetishist's vinyl bodysuit, full of hood, is situated hanging inside the attic, with kinky effects. The house includes strange neighbors. Jessica Lange plays Constance, a busybody Southern belle with an infinitely more intrusive daughter, Adelaide, who (like Jamie Maker, representing her wonderfully) has Lower syndrome. Adult but childlike, the irrepressible Adelaide keeps busting into the Harmon's home."Addie will almost always search for an easy method by," Constance notifies Vivien matter-of-factly. "She's a bug up her ass relevant for this house. Has.InchTogether together with his practice placed inherited home, Dr. Harmon's ill-advised first client can be a teen psychopath (Evan Peters), who bonds while using Harmons' troubled daughter after they meet cute (if bizarrely) inside the bathroom, where she's cutting herself. It will get better the weirdness available. Did we mention Moira, the longtime housekeeper (carried out by Frances Conroy, past matriarch of "Six Foot Under")? She's the type of spectral figure who alerts these new entrepreneurs the home "features a personality feelings. Mistreat it and will also be sorry.InchBut Ben sees Moira yet another way. Spinsterish, middle-aged Moira appears to him as "Moira, Junior." (carried out by Alexandra Breckenridge), a stylish youthful temptress getting a scanty French-maid outfit together with a come-on look. This problematic illusion sparks the premiere's raciest interlude. Emerging nude within the shower, Ben spies Youthful Moira alone in the mattress room pleasuring herself. Inflamed with the vision, he retreats to another room, still inside the aficionado, where, moaning and whimpering, he'll get themselves off strongly.Speaking about flames, the house seems to impose pyromania on people who inhabit it. Just consider former resident Ray Harvey (carried out by Dennis O'Hare), who a while back incinerated his entire family, then emerged with grotesque scars within the inferno he set.Could this type of incident repeat itself while using Harmons? Ben, out of the blue snapped up with the urge to strike matches while sleepwalking, seems, beneath the house's spell, to become firebug inside the making. The premiere dumps numerous major questions regarding everyone else, like the most fundamental: How come the Harmons stay in this crazy house? With the finish in the second episode, Vivien was already frustrated. She's ready to vacate. Without any part of everyone else would argue along with her.You never know just what the future brings for "American Horror Story"? Does it still jolt and engage everyone else? Will the reason to help keep the Harmons chilled inside their macabre manse be sufficient to keep audiences coming back every week?Copyright laws laws and regulations 2011 Connected Press. Disney's 'Lone Ranger' Close to Riding Again After Johnny Depp, Jerry Bruckheimer, Gore Verbinski Reduce Fees

Ask Disney's studio chief Rich Ross, who appears to be on the brink of resurrecting The Lone Ranger with star Johnny Depp, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski all remaining on board. After budget negotiations that dragged on until the film missed its autumn start date, the project looks like it might crawl back from the precipice thanks to some unusual financial footwork. ANALYSIS: Why Disney Might Make 'Lone Ranger' -- Reluctantly The fantasy Western, once budgeted at an eye-popping $250 million, will be cut down to $215 million. To arrive at that figure (and a green light), the creatives involved will reduce their fees: no $20 million for Depp, no $10 million apiece for Bruckheimer and Verbinski, as is their norm on tentpoles. A source also says the filmmakers will sacrifice their back-end participation if the film comes in over budget, a significant incentive to run a tight ship. One of several planned train sequences has been scrapped, and a number of CGI-heavy bells and whistles have been eliminated. But what's most surprising of all is that an insider tells The Hollywood Reporter that vendors working on the film, such as special effects houses and even hotels, are being asked to accept reduced guaranteed fees in order to secure the business of the production. STORY: 'Lone Ranger': Director, Producer Offer to Trim Fees as Budget Battle Rages While details are sparse, top executives at other studios say they have never heard of such shared sacrifice on a major studio release. And even with all those concessions, many think the budget is still far too high -- and remain skeptical that Verbinski can meet it. Disney has not announced whether Lone Ranger can still hit theaters by its planned holiday 2012 release date. She's still split from Peter and furious with Kalinda, but this year will even see Eli join the ranks at Lockhart Gardner and Peter get back his position as top dog in the State's Attorney's office. Prior to the year formally starts, catch on all of the intrigue from last season and also the teases for what's ahead. Plus, we share our greatest burning questions for just one of TV's most unpredictable series: Fall Preview: Get scoop in your favorite coming back shows Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) Where Were We: Her husband, Peter, won back the State's Attorney office, but Alicia had little to celebrate when she learned he'd rested together with her Best friend Kalinda years before. Next thought, she started her husband out, told K to consider a hike and was last seen entering a $7,800-a-evening presidential hotel suite together with her law school love and boss, Will. What's Next: We'll let individuals steamy promotions perform the speaking. Yes, it appears the great wife (with bangs!) will ultimately stop being the great wife and begin getting a chuckle. And the Free Alicia tour gets hotter, her recent winning streak at the office might be in risk when she needs to face not just her former work rival, Cary, but additionally her estranged husband. Greatest Burning Question: Sure, they appear good in writing - as well as in the elevator - but where do Alicia and can really go next? He might have loved her for fifteen years (!) but he's still her boss and, as we have learned many occasions before, nothing comes between Will and also the win. Will Gardner (Josh Charles) Where Were We: Will and Diane effectively turned away Derrick Bond's hostile takeover plans and Chicago's 16th most qualified bachelor leaped into mattress with Alicia. What's Next: Before Blake fled town, he reminded Will he was billed with masking Will's thievery at his old firm. The incident never was known to again, but thinking about what went down when Blake discovered about Kalinda's romp with Peter, you will find there's feeling this indiscretion will not stay hidden forever. Also, Will will get another blast from his past when his ex, lawyer Celeste (Lisa Edelstein) turns up. Greatest Burning Question: Just how much money did Will steal? And when it's badly because it appears, what shot is he going to have with Alicia if/when she discovers? She already was by her guy once, and wound up getting tricked, therefore we think her bullsh-- tolerance is fairly low nowadays. Did Peter, Alicia and can result in the list? Take a look at the most popular TV love triangles Kalinda Sharma (Archie Panjabi) Where Were We: Oh, Kalinda. We learned in Season 2 that they transformed her identity because she was bored, however the real surprise was that they had rested with Peter years prior, and subsequently lost among her only buddies in Alicia. Between her many battles with Blake, she also kissed Cary and rested with old friend Sophia, but backed off when she learned Sophia were built with a husband. What's Next: When one door shuts, another opens, so while Kalinda and Alicia continue to be around the outs, Kalinda will build up a powerful working relationship and friendship with Eli. Also, search for the private eye to try and determine whether her attraction to Cary is romantic or innocent. Greatest Burning Question: Will Kalinda and Cary be a lot more than buddies? And when so, exactly how will affecting her seriously strained working relationship with Alicia (Cary is Alicia's enemy, in the end) and Kalinda's untidy ties to Peter, who's now Cary's boss? Cary Agos (Matt Czuchry)Where Were We: Cary got a deal revisit Lockhart Gardner, but balked when he learned he will be a year behind Alicia (Ignore it. The bake-off is really 2010). Rather, Cary could keep his job within the State's Attorney's office precisely for that reason he thought he may lose it - due to his competition together with his new boss' wife, Alicia. What's Next: Peter appears going to take lower the (former) Mrs., and Cary is only the guy to assist him do this. Cary go for a brand new co-worker (and perhaps more?) as recurring guest star Monica Raymund.Greatest Burning Question: Will things ever progress for him and Kalinda beyond that surprising lip-lock last season? And when they are doing progress, can Cary really tame the promiscuous and lady behind individuals boots of justice? Take a look at all of the familiar faces coming back to TV this season Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski)Where Were We: Diane got a deal to hightail it using the Marlboro Guy, but made a decision to stay and save the firm. She also effectively nabbed Eli Gold to setup shop at Lockhart, Gardner, with rising connect Alicia as his liaison. What's Next: After coming thisclose to running for judge in Season 1, Diane is going to be jumping back to politics next season. The move won't affect her career, additionally, it may mean good stuff on her sex life when she meets a more youthful guy referred to like a liberal version from the Marlboro Guy. (Appears like she will finally toss that Sarah Palin memoir!)Greatest Burning Question: She put her ethics before her political aspirations in Season 1, but exactly how dirty is Diane prepared to get her hands this time around around? And just what does she want in the political spectrum? Eli Gold (Alan Cumming)Where Were We: Eli assisted get Peter in office, simply to learn his political ace in the hole - the openly admired Alicia - had left the brand new state's attorney. Together with his eyes still set around the governor's office, Eli made the decision to setup shop at Lockhart Gardner and was adamant on getting Alicia as his liaison, whether she loved it or otherwise. What is Next: Alicia and Eli will clearly work together more, what exactly will their relationship seem like since she's avoid Peter? Eli will even result in a stir within the firm when he disagrees with Diane and teams track of Kalinda. Also, prepare for a more in-depth consider the guy behind the politician when Eli's ex-wife, performed by Parker Posey, bakes an appearance.Greatest Burning Question: What lengths is Eli willing to visit hide the Florricks' split in the public and Peter a Kennedy-esque estimate your eyes of voters? If Alicia is dating a guy about town like Will, is not it only such a long time before Peter's carriage turns back to a pumpkin? Eli is way too cunning to allow his political aspirations go to waste so rapidly. The brand new season from the Good Wife premieres on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 9/8c on CBS. Sony aims for games to sell 3D TVs
Sony hopes its line of high-profile 3D videogames will boost the sale of 3D television sets, creating a home market for the format.
With sales of 3D TVs still sluggish, Sony hopes videogames will get more consumers to embrace the technology at home. The company is about to put considerable marketing muscle behind its PlayStation 3 console as a device that can play both 3D games and movies -- just as it touted the hardware as a reason consumers should start buying Blu-rays several years ago.A year after Sony made the PS3 3D-compatible through a free upgrade, the company has released 50 games, including tentpoles "Call of Duty: Black Ops," "The Fight," "MLB 11: The Show" and "Killzone 3," that can be played on 3D TVs using the console. That's expected to grow to 100 by March with a new wave of titles such as "Resistance 3," "Batman: Arkham City" and "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception."But the PlayStation brand will expand its line of hardware this fall to include a 3D TV set as well. A 24-inch 3D monitor, priced at $499, will come bundled with racer "MotorStorm Apocalypse" and pair of 3D glasses that can also be used with Sony's Bravia-branded 3D TV sets. The monitor was first announced at the E3 videogame confab in May.But now that it's about to hit store shelves, one key selling point is expected to be that two gamers will be able compete head-to-head without needing to split the screen. The SimulView technology built into the TV and glasses enables one wearer to see one image, while the other sees their own character's viewpoint at the same time without any interference.Designers say the capability of the glasses portend new features that could be built into 3D eyewear in the future, which could add more functionality into the specs and make them less of annoyance to the wearer. Additional goggles could include a virtual reality headset and 3D holographs that are tracked by head movements, allowing an object to be viewed from underneath or from the sides. But in Sony's presentation at this week's 3D Entertainment Summit at Hollywood & Highland, the company will say that many consumers already have 3D in their living rooms given more than 50 million consoles already connected to TVs.Replacing those TVs with 3D units is another matter.Only 13% of U.S. consumers who had not purchased a TV during the past year say they plan to purchase a new set within the next three to 12 months, according to research firm IHS iSuppli. Screen size, price, picture quality and Internet connectivity were cited as factors when making such a purchase, the firm said, not 3D.In May, iSuppli said worldwide shipments of 3D TVs will grow to 23.4 million units in 2011, up from 4.2 million in 2010. It forecasts shipments of 54.2 million units in 2012, reaching 159.2 million in 2015.Among those who are buying, 38% favored sets under 30 inches, which should help Sony move more PlayStation-branded screens, iSuppli said. The specific size of the screen was chosen as a way to target the college market and consumers seeking an additional screen for game rooms or bedrooms. It also doesn't create much competition for Sony's Bravia business, whose 3D TVs are typically larger. In fact, few 3D TVs are sold in smaller sizes, which has proved an annoyance for gamemakers developing 3D games -- a 40-inch 3D TV is typically found on many workstations. We're not out to make TVs," Simon Benson, senior development manager, and stereoscopic 3D team member at Sony's Evolution Studios, told Variety. "We're not out to compete with the Bravia division." Sony ranks behind Samsung as the top seller of 3D TV sets, according to NPD. Panasonic and LG also rank high in market share.Sony's tech wizards, especially those inside PlayStation, aim to make sure the "3D viewing experience is very comfortable," said Mick Hocking, Sony's chief of 3D games. While Sony has been developing 3D for the consumer market for the past two years, company reps said it took the past year to educate the videogames biz on how to fully take advantage of the technology. "One year in we now know what gaming requires from 3D," Benson said.Added Hocking, "The first phase was getting people to understand how to work with 3D."What that meant was promoting a technological set of principles for creating games in the 3D format, including avoiding quick cuts and letting shots run longer and giving various objects their own planes, for example. The next phase is about how to use 3D creatively," Hocking said. One trick in "Killzone 3" blurs the gun outline so that gamers can focus more easily on looking through a site to take down targets. The games group has also had to educate developers on the costs to create 3D games.
